Plumbing & Heating City & Guilds NVQ Level 2 Diploma
This course will provide you with the skills, knowledge and experience you will need to progress your career in the plumbing trade. You will learn to undertake a range of duties, such as the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, safety, hot and cold water systems, sanitation and central heating.
To begin this Apprenticeship you will need to be employed for a minimum of 30 hours per week in a relevant job role. You will also need 3 GCSEs at grades A-D (including English and Maths), or Level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths.
The qualifications gained during this Apprenticeship will allow you to become competent to industry standards in either plumbing and heating or domestic heating. You will be need to demonstrate the ability to perform the necessary skills and the knowledge required to be assessed against the National Occupational Standards.
You will study from the following units:
Understand and carry out safe working practices in building services engineering
Understand how to communicate with others within building services engineering
Understand how to apply environmental protection measures within building services engineering
Understand how to apply scientific principles within mechanical engineering services
Understand and carry out site preparation, and pipework fabrication techniques for domestic plumbing and heating systems
Understand and apply domestic cold water system installation and maintenance techniques
Understand and apply domestic hot water system installation and maintenance techniques
Understand and apply domestic central heating system installation and maintenance techniques
Understand and apply domestic rainwater system installation and maintenance techniques
Understand and apply domestic above ground drainage system installation and maintenance techniques
Apply safe working practices in building services engineering working environment
Install and maintain domestic plumbing and heating systems.
During the course you will also have the opportunity to attend trade shows and visits to manufacturers.
You will be assessed through ten online exams, along with 60 College-based practical assessments. Workplace assessments will also be undertaken to prove your competency.
Further study and career options
On completion of this course you will be able to progress to the following qualifications:
NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Plumbing and Heating (either gas option, oil option, solid fuel option, or environmental technologies)
NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Heating (either gas option, oil option, solid fuel option, or environmental technologies).
This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19-24 on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.
Plumbing NVQ Level 2
Technical Certificate in Plumbing.
The main aim of this course.
To gain an NVQ 2 you need to meet the needs of the plumbing industry and to provide apprentice plumbers with the necessary formal qualifications for recognition as a qualified plumber.
Plumbing Course Content:
The most recognised NVQ qualification is that accredited by City and Guilds.
The City & Guilds Level 2 technical certificate is a mix of classroom based theory and practical workshop training and experience. The course usually comprises of around 8 units each of which you will be tested on as you progress.
Provide learners with skills in the design and installation principles of hot and cold water systems, sanitary systems and central heating systems.
Commissioning and Decommissioning Systems.
Skills needed to make and declare a system in good working order and ready for operation and equally declare a system unfit for use.
Effective Working Relationships.
This module is measured by your practical work and the way you have conducted yourself at work.
Sheet Weathering Systems.
Student will learn how to fabricate, install and check sheet lead weathering system components and maintain sheet lead weathering systems. This is also a key module with the plumbing NVQ level 2.
Maintenance and Efficiency of Systems
Provide learners with skills to maintain and repair hot and cold water systems, sanitary systems and central heating systems. Safe Working Environment
You will complete a module outlining the basic safety regulations.
Quality Development of Service
This module concentrates on progression and development of skills learned to provide the best service to customers.
Approximate time to complete NVQ level 2 plumbing course.
Two years, part-time whilst working.

Plumbing NVQ Level 2
Plumbing NVQ Level 3
In most cases you will need to be employed within the trade.
However in some cases if you are not in the trade but have a basic plumbing certificate (NVQ level 1) or plumbing theory diploma (available through distance learning) you may be given entry to the course.
If you are accepted onto the course without being employed in the trade you must then find suitable employment as much of the work is practical.
You can be considered for training as soon as you leave school. There is no age limit when the training can commence.
The industry has set entry requirements for selection into the training scheme as follows: GCSE Passes:
A minimum points score of 14 (from a maximum of 6 subjects), including at least 2 points from English and 4 from Mathematics or Accountancy or Physics or Chemistry or Technology and Design.
The points system is outlines below:
A = 10 points, B = 8 points, C = 6 points, D = 4 points, E = 2 points, F = 1 point.
All modules are assessed by a mixture of practical and written tests.
